The inspectors call

Pick up a newspaper and you're almost guaranteed to find a story about failing care services, whether in hospitals, care homes or the wider community.
It's easy to focus on the bad news, but the reality is that most care providers are working very hard to ensure their services are safe, caring and compassionate. Here at Tendacare, we were delighted that our Surrey-based homecare services received a 'Good' rating following our inspection last year, and felt pleased that the Care Quality Commission comments reflected the wonderful service we offer. You can read the whole report here, but we'd like to summarise some of the remarks to give you a flavour of the inspectors' findings. The report stated:
• "The service provided was safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led."
• "Staff were knowledgeable about the people they gave support to and the way people liked to be supported."
• "Staff said the organisation was a good one to work for and they enjoyed their work. They had access to good training, support and there were opportunities for career advancement."
• "People's opinions, preferences and choices were sought and acted upon, and their privacy and dignity were respected and promoted by staff."

You can imagine how thrilled we were to receive this recognition, but not for one second has the report led to complacency. Indeed, we're striving to go beyond 'Good' to reach the very top level of 'Outstanding', which is achieved by only a very small percentage of care providers.
One of the ways we continually improve is by seeking regular feedback from our clients and their families. If there's something we could do better we're keen to hear about it, and wherever possible we'll alter a care package accordingly. With this in mind, we don't wait for inspectors to call before assessing our service; we perform regular audits to judge how we're performing on an everyday basis. 
Another key factor in our success is to ensure our staff benefit from the latest training. We aim to recruit carers locally from Leatherhead, Ashtead, Epsom and the surrounding area so they are already familiar with the communities they are serving.
